Sales drop 12%

Retail sales in June dropped more than 12% compared with the same month last year, according to the Maine State Planning Office.

Total taxable retail sales in June were $1.56 billion, down 12.2% from June 2008 and the lowest figure for June for the past five years. The biggest drops were in building supply sales, which fell more than 19% to $205 million, and lodging sales, which dropped 16.4% to nearly $63 million, according to data from the SPO. Only food store sales saw an increase over last June, rising 2.2% to nearly $142 million.

Year-to-date sales are 9.7% lower year to date compared with the same six-month period last year, according to the SPO.
