Renovation work has begun in Sanford to turn a former textile mill into a $12.6 million residential or mixed-use building.
Clean-up work began Monday at the former Sanford Mill Number One, once a Goodall woolen cloth manufacturing facility and an Eastern Plastics factory, according to the Journal Tribune. Initial clean-up is expected to take two months and will cost about $400,000, which is funded by federal brownfields grants. The town took ownership of the long-vacant building by eminent domain last year, and developer Portland-based Northland Enterprises LLC is planning on turning the 61,000-square-foot building into either a residential complex or a mix of commercial and residential units, according to the paper. Renovation work will likely take a year.
The mill is in a Pine Tree Zone, which qualifies the project for tax incentives. Northland Enterprises is also working to get historic tax credits, and the Maine Historic Preservation Commission voted recently to nominate the 7.5 acre property to be included in the National Register of Historic Places.
