Sanford mill’s partial demolition to begin
Demolition of the rear structure of the Stenton Trust mill in Sanford is expected to begin late September.
Seacoastonline.com reported the mill’s front structure might be eligible for designation to the National Register of Historic Places, which could prove useful to obtain revitalization funds. City Manager Steven Buck said the front building has a potential buyer.
The 1920s-era mill’s six-story rear structure was destroyed by fire in June 2017, in what was the largest fire in Sanford’s history, leaving concrete rubble and hazardous materials, the Journal Tribune reported at that time. The foundation of the rear tower will remain intact and could be used for parking, Buck told the city council.
According to Buck’s July 10 report to the council, the federal Environmental Protection Agency has agreed to perform a targeted demolition of the rear tower to specifically removed asbestos and mixed contaminated wastes from the facility.
The agency has also filed with the Maine Historic Preservation Organization seeking a ruling on the saw-toothed roof connector portion of the complex as to its historic significance and potential need to preserve during demolition. The city has continued to meet with an “engaged developer” for a “partnered redevelopment” of the complex.
