Sappi fined for unsafe working conditions

Sappi Fine Paper North America's mill in Skowhegan has been cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for unsafe working conditions and fined $136,000.

OSHA cited the Somerset Mill for 14 violations considered "serious," or likely to result in serious physical harm or death, including unguarded, open-sided floor platforms, unguarded attachments on paper machines and defective guarding for a saw, according to the Morning Sentinel. OSHA proposed $28,500 in fines for those violations, plus an additional $107,500 fine for repeat violations found earlier this year. Fred Oettinger, manager of the mill, did not directly address the citations but did defend the mill's safety record, saying the mill has one of the lowest injury rates in the paper industry. Sappi plans to issue a response to OSHA by the three-week deadline.

The Sappi mill was fined $22,725 last year for safety violations.
