Scarborough's Higgins Beach Market to be razed, rebuilt

Photo / Peter Van Allen The existing Higgins Beach Market in Scarborough will be torn down to make way for its successor.

Neighbors in the Higgins Beach area of Scarborough are used to the sound of excavators razing buildings to make way for the new.

Now, the Higgins Beach Market is about to be leveled. In its place will be a new, modern version of the store.

While some neighbors may lament the loss of the open-air, rustic feel of the previous market, it's expected that the newer version will stock more fresh food and be able to offer a wide range of menu items.

The owner is Big Tree Hospitality, which has done makeovers of the South Freeport Market and Falmouth's Town Landing Market and also owns the vaunted Eventide Oyster restaurant in Portland.

Mainebiz caught up with Big Tree's Amy Caramante, who oversees communications and culture for the company.

Mainebiz: What advantages will the new space have?

Amy Caramante: The renovation is more about creating a market that is better equipped to handle the elements. It's no secret that we've suffered from frequent flooding in the building is in tough condition. The open-air market was awesome, but the new iteration will provide updated drainage options, cover from wind, rain and just be a solid update.
