Sea Bags opens store in Rockland

Sea Bags' founder and COO Beth Shissler and CEO Don Oakes recently were honored as U.S. Small Business Administration's 2018 Maine Small Business Persons of the Year. The Portland-based retailer plans to open its 16th East Coast store in Rockland on Friday.
Sea Bags, designers and manufacturers of handmade items from recycled sails, is opening a store in Rockland on Friday that will feature regionally specific products in addition to its standard designs, totes and bags.
The year-round store will be at 371 Main St. and is Sea Bags’ 16th store on the East Coast.
"Rockland has been on our list of potential locations for one of our stores for a number of years,” said Sea Bags CEO Don Oakes. “We’ve had great success with the store we opened on Main Street in Camden last year and are excited about bringing our products to the folks in Rockland this year. Another store in Maine was not in our plans for this year, but when the opportunity came up recently to bring another Sea Bags store to the Mid-Coast, we jumped on it.”
Renowned for its lively arts scene, cafes and shops and boutiques, Rockland is also home to many sailors and sailing enthusiasts, including the largest windjammer fleet in the country.
Among unique regional products that will be featured at the Rockland store are the Rockland Coastal Retreat and Penobscot Bay Nautical Chart designs that will appear on products ranging from totes and handbags to wine bags and placemats.
Founded in 1999, Sea Bags is based in the historic Old Port district of Portland at 25 Custom House Wharf. Its founder and COO Beth Shissler and CEO Don Oakes recently were honored as U.S. Small Business Administration's 2018 Maine Small Business Persons of the Year.
In addition to Rockland and Portland, Sea Bags has retail stores in Freeport and Camden; Portsmouth, N.H.; Newburyport, Rockport, Chatham, Mashpee and Boston, Mass.; Mystic, Conn.; Newport, R.I.; Greenport, N.Y.; Cape May, N.J.; and Annapolis, Md.
