Sea Dogs president and first employee will step down

Charlie Eshbach, president of the Portland Sea Dogs baseball team and its first employee, will retire from that role and become a senior advisor, the team announced on Monday.
Charlie Eshbach, president of the Portland Sea Dogs AA-baseball team and its first employee, will retire from his role, the team said Monday in a news release.
Executive Vice President and General Manager Geoff Iacuessa will be promoted to the position, while Eschbach will become a senior advisor to the team. No date for the transition was announced.
Eshbach has served as the Sea Dogs’ president since 1992, when he was hired by team founder Dan Burke. In their 1994 inaugural season, the team led the Eastern League in attendance, attracting 375,000 fans, and since then has been one of league’s biggest crowd-drawers.
The team plays home games at Portland’s 7,400-seat Hadlock Field.
Since 2003, the Sea Dogs have been the AA affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, and previously were affiliated with the Florida Marlins. The Sea Dogs won the Eastern League Championship in 2006, and have taken the pennant as winner of the league’s Northern Division six times.
Eshbach was inducted into the Sea Dogs Hall of Fame last month, and in 2013 was named “King of Baseball” by the Minor League Baseball organization for his accomplishments in the game.
Before joining the Sea Dogs, he served 11 years as Eastern League president and received the inaugural Warren Giles Award for outstanding service as a league president in 1984. He began his baseball career in 1974, and served as general manager of the Eastern League’s Reading Phillies in 1978.
"Charlie has been a remarkable leader of our organization, combining great vision with a strong business sense and commitment to our fans and our community," said Sea Dogs Chairman Bill Burke, son of the founder. "High on his list of achievements is the recruiting and grooming of future leaders, including Geoff Iacuessa."
Iacuessa, a resident of South Portland, has been employed by the Sea Dogs since 2001. He began his current role in 2010 and in 2015 he was named the 2015 Eastern League “executive of the year.”
