Senate backs table games, rejects Lewiston casino

The Maine Senate has voted in favor of allowing Bangor's Hollywood Slots to offer table games and rejected a bill to allow a casino in Lewiston.

The bill allows Hollywood Slots to become a full casino upon the opening of the Oxford County casino approved by voters last year, according to MaineToday Media. Opponents of the Lewiston casino said unlike the proposed racinos in Biddeford and Washington County, which lawmakers voted to support last week, the project would compete with the Oxford project but do nothing to help Maine's harness racing industry.

Last week, the Senate cast a preliminary vote against Lewiston's bill, while the House supported it. The measure came before the Legislature as a citizens' initiative, so it will be put to a statewide ballot if lawmakers reject it. The measure and the proposal for Hollywood Slots face further votes.

Gov. Paul LePage has said he will veto the bill if it passes, along with the proposal for racinos in Biddeford and Washington County, in favor of a statewide referendum.
