A settlement has cleared allegations of financial mismanagement by the founder of an Ogunquit-to-Portland charity run, called Run for the Fallen Maine.
The Portland Press Herald reported a settlement reached in January states that the rumors of financial mismanagement at the organization were "unfounded and wrong."
Those rumors apparently stemmed from bad blood between co-founders John Mixon and Bob Winn, who started the event in 2008 to benefit families of service members with Maine ties who have been killed since Sept. 11, 2001.
Winn ended his involvement with the race after its first year, the paper reported, and rumors began to surface soon after that Mixon was mismanaging the organization's money.
Mixon then sued Winn and his girlfriend, Diana Allen, in York County Superior Court, saying the rumors were traced back to them.
In January, the paper reported, Mixon received a six-figure cash settlement and a statement saying the rumors were false. The organization has its next race in August.
Last year, the race took in about $108,000, but Mixon and board members told the paper that rumors hurt the organization's ability to raise funds. Mixon said he decided to make public the court settlement to clear up uncertainty about the organization and its handling of money.
