UMS, faculty seek contract intervention

The University of Maine System and its faculty union are seeking state intervention in a contract negotiation process that has gone unresolved for more than two years.

The Kennebec Journal reported the faculty union has requested arbitration with the Maine Labor Relations Board while the university system has filed a complaint with that board over union approval of a "work-to-rule" policy.

As state employees cannot strike, that policy is a tactic whereby some faculty members refuse to participate in program reviews, committee work and other tasks that the union says are voluntary and not required by contract.

The UMS complaint argues that's not the case and that those job duties are required.

The paper reported that union chapters at all seven UMS campuses have endorsed that work-to-rule policy on a voluntary basis.
