Seven Maine rural hospitals among top 18 in national safety ranking
Peter Hayes, president and CEO of the Maine Health Management Coalition, highlighted the seven Maine rural hospitals named by The Leapfrog Group as being among the top 18 rural hospitals in the nation for safety and quality of care.
The Leapfrog Group named seven Maine hospitals to its 2017 national list of Top Rural Hospitals, an elite award recognizing hospitals that have better systems in place to prevent medication errors, higher quality on maternity care and lower infection rates compared to their peers.
Only 18 rural hospitals nationwide were recognized by Leapfrog Group for meeting its ‘A’ grade of safety and quality standards. The grade is based on national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Hospital Association.
This year, Leapfrog recognized 109 Top Hospitals across the country: 10 children’s hospitals, 45 general hospitals, 18 rural hospitals and 36 teaching hospitals.
The seven Maine hospitals included in the top 18 rural hospitals are:
- The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle.
- Inland Hospital in Waterville.
- Blue Hill Memorial Hospital in Blue Hill.
- Bridgton Hospital in Bridgton.
- LincolnHealth in Damariscotta.
- Down East Community Hospital
- Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.
“We are very proud of our rural hospitals for being such outstanding leaders on quality and transparency,” Peter Hayes, president and CEO of the Maine Health Management Coalition, said in a news release. “Maine brought home seven of the 18 total rural hospital awards in the country and I think it speaks to how dedicated our health care leaders are to making sure we have safe, patient-centered care for our citizens. I applaud their efforts and encourage them to keep striving to be the best that they can be.”

Maine is the only state in the nation with 100% participation in the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which evaluates infection rates, maternity care and a hospital’s ability to prevent medication errors, among other standards.
