The Hews Co. LLC, a South Portland-based manufacturer and distributor of truck bodies and equipment, has named two new leaders, both members of the family that has owned and operated the company for four generations.
Jim Hews has rejoined the Hews Co. as chief operating officer. He most recently worked for Micron Technology Inc. in Boise, Idaho, as a project manager for new equipment development.
Prior to that, Jim Hews served as vice president of operations for the Hews Co., where he gained experience with the company’s business operations, key manufacturers and suppliers. His career also includes four years with the FBI, where he led international and domestic counter-terrorism investigations in the New York City area.
In addition, Drew Hews has been promoted to corporate vice president of operations, overseeing all production operations including workflow, quality control and workplace safety.
Drew Hews has been with the company for over 20 years, starting in the service department as a service writer, and then taking on increasing levels of responsibility. Prior to his new role, he was the branch manager of the Hews Co.’s operations in Bow, N.H.
The Hews Co. was founded in 1927. The company is also led by Bob Hews, president, and Charlie Hews, executive vice president.
As the fourth generation of the family takes leadership roles, the company enters rarefied territory. Only 3% of such businesses make it to the fourth generation, according to the Institute for Family-Owned Business.
Hews provides equipment and accessories for a variety of truck classes throughout the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic. In addition to its South Portland and New Hampshire locations, the company has a branch in Westminster, Md.
