South Portland petition looks at one-way traffic preservation

A group of business owners and residents have begun collecting signatures for a petition that looks to overturn the 4-2 decision in March by the South Portland City Council that would see a block on Ocean Street between E and D streets converted into two-way traffic.

According to The Forecaster, since 2012, the single block of Ocean Street north of Legion Square has only allowed one-way northbound traffic. The City Council’s decision would convert the block back into two-way traffic. That has petitioners saying the switch would reduce nearby parking for prospective customers and make the area less accessible and safe for pedestrians.

Supporters of turning the block back into two-way traffic say the angled parking introduced with one-way traffic is dangerous and that one-way streets make the area confusing to navigate.

Some members of the city council say the conversion into one-way traffic was only meant to be temporary, according to The Forecaster.
