Lobbyist and Sportsman's Alliance of Maine Executive Director George Smith announced yesterday he is planning to retire after 18 years as SAM's chief.
Smith, 62, plans to serve until December, though the hunting and fishing organization plans to name a new director by July 1, according to the Bangor Daily News. Smith dispelled rumors that he was forced out by SAM's board of directors, saying he wants "to cut back [on hours] and they want a more traditional presence in the office."
Smith has become one of the state's more visible lobbyists, known for his aggressive approach in advocating for the organization's 12,000 members. Smith opposed the 2006 land deal that added Katahdin Lake to Baxter State Park because it restricted hunting in certain areas, and earlier this year fought against a bill to require a registry for saltwater fishing, which ultimately passed. He plans to stay involved with SAM and also focus on his consulting business, Mainely Marketing.
