The city of Brewer has found a buyer for one of the buildings being vacated by the closure of auto parts maker ZF-Lemforder.
Bangor resident Bill Varney, founder and co-owner of insurance company Varney Agency, bought a 55,000-square-foot warehouse building owned by the city and previously leased by Lemforder, according to the Bangor Daily News. Brewer Economic Development Director D'arcy Main-Boyington said Varney plans to lease the space to various tenants, and that it could be used for manufacturing, shipping and research and development. The property was listed for $1.8 million, but a sale price was not disclosed. Lemforder's 120,000-square-foot main manufacturing building, which sits nearby, is still for sale for $3.5 million.
The Germany-based company announced in January 2009 it would close its auto parts manufacturing facility in Brewer by mid-2010, putting 127 employees out of work. At its peak, the facility employed more than 400 people. A handful of workers have remained in the manufacturing building to dismantle equipment, but the facility is expected to be empty by the end of the year, according to the paper.
