The state's top liquor official is hoping to renegotiate a contract for liquor distribution that would net the state as much as $30 million annually before the year's end, according to WCSH6.
That deal is part of a plan Gov. Paul LePage proposed that would use revenue bonds to repay the state's $186 million share of $484 million in MaineCare debt owed to hospitals in the state.
The TV station reported that Gerry Reid, director of Maine's Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery, said the state can work out a new agreement that brings in nearly triple the current share of the liquor distribution contract, which brought in $8 million to the state in 2011.
Reid said the plan would call for his bureau to have more involvement in wholesale liquor operations while a contractor would continue to process orders, payments and a distributor would continue to manage inventory.
Reid said the state would still set the prices but he hopes to lower liquor prices to compete with New Hampshire.
