State nears deal with cannery buyer

State officials are close to striking a deal that would allow a new buyer to purchase the Bumble Bee Foods cannery in Prospect Harbor and save 128 jobs.

An undisclosed seafood-processing company has signed a nonbinding letter of intent to buy the former Stinson Seafood plant from Bumble Bee Foods LLC, David Farmer, spokesman for Gov. John Baldacci, told the Associated Press. The prospective buyer would use the cannery to process lobsters and other seafood. Farmer told the AP the governor hopes to announce a deal by mid-May. The prospective buyer has indicated it would give hiring preference to current employees and that they might be able to bridge their health care benefits from one employer to the next, Farmer told the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. He says the new buyer could make the plant operational by Aug. 1.

Yesterday's announcement came on the final day of sardine processing at the 135-year-old plant, which is also the last plant of its type in the United States. Bumble Bee announced the closure in February.
