A legislative committee voted Tuesday to form a group that will study the process for approving business names in the state in response to a Waterville business that said a similarly named Bangor business caused confusion for customers.
The Kennebec Journal reported the Legislature's Judiciary Committee has directed the secretary of state to form a working group to study the process for approving business names. The action follows discussion of a bill that would have required the state to disregard "too," "two," "2," "II" and "ii" as distinct elements of a business' name.
The bill emerged from the case of Bumper to Bumper Repair in Waterville, whose owners said a Bangor auto shop began doing business as Bumper2Bumper and created confusion for customers. The Bangor business received an "F" rating from the Better Business Bureau, according to the paper.
Waterville House Democrat Henry Beck, who sponsored the bill, told the paper that the working group would work to "avoid deceptively similar names." The working group will be asked to report back to the Legislature next year.
