Stitching program trains new Mainers for textile industry
A program formed by Old Port Wool & Textile Co., Portland Adult Education, Southern Maine Community College and Coastal Enterprises Inc. is training students how to stitch and placing them in jobs in southern Maine textile companies.
The Forecaster reported the classes, facilitated by Old Port Wool & Textile Co. owner Dory Richards Waxman, have been filled mostly by women who are “new Mainers.”
Waxman started classes in July 2015 and graduated the fourth class on Dec. 15, totaling 36 graduates. She said she hopes the program becomes accredited by the Department of Labor next year. Waxman partners with 25 textile businesses in southern Maine, including American Roots Wear, owned by her son Ben Waxman, who, with his wife, Whitney Reynolds, is a 2017 Mainebiz Next List honoree.
New Americans, Waxman told the paper, are “our workforce. They’re who we need to count on for the future of Maine.”
