Study: Medicare cuts to cost Maine $12M

A proposed cut in federal Medicare will cost Maine more than $12 million in business activity and lost wages, according to a new study released by the Maine Health Care Association.

The study, completed by the American Health Care Association, says the Bush Administration's $770 million in proposed cuts to the Medicare Part A program, which provides funding for nursing homes, will cost Maine $8.5 million in total economic activity and $4.1 million in lost wages, according to a press release from the MHCA. The state also stands to lose an additional $3.9 million in nursing home funding, the releases says.

Susan Feeney, a spokesperson for AHCA, said rural communities in Maine, where long term care facilities are a major employer, likely will be harder hit by the proposed federal cuts.
