Sugarloaf ski resort officials have announced a 600-acre expansion, nearly doubling the terrain now available for snowboarders and skiers.
Stephen Kircher, the president of Boyne East, operators of Sugarloaf in Carrabassett Valley, told the Sun Journal the new terrain would be created on Burnt Mountain, just east of Sugarloaf. Once complete, the expansion will make Sugarloaf the largest ski area east of the Rocky Mountains with 1,306 acres, supplanting Killington in Vermont, the paper reported.
John Diller, Sugarloaf's general manager, told the paper 200 acres of glades would be ready for the upcoming ski season as part of phase one of the development. The Bangor Daily News reported the three-phase plan will take six years to complete. Following the first phase on Brackett Basin this winter, Sugarloaf officials intend to create a 135-acre tract to provide access to Burnt Mountain's summit, followed by another 250 acres on the mountain's north face in the final phase.
