The task force charged with finding $25 million in budget cuts finished its work Monday, with agreement to trim spending in health care, education and other areas.
Recommendations by the Streamline and Prioritize Core Government Services Task Force include a $3.1 million reduction to hospitals for outpatient services and a $20,606 cut to school-based health centers, the Bangor Daily News reported. Sen. Dawn Hill, D-York, said the group unanimously approved many of the cuts to the 2012-2013 budget. The Legislature still must approve the cuts, and public hearings are likely to happen in January.
Additional budget cuts could be on the horizon. Last week, Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew told lawmakers her department is expected to have a shortfall of $121 million for the budget year that ends in June. Gov. Paul LePage is expected to address the projected shortfall in a supplemental budget proposal to be released in the next two weeks.
