Task force to examine energy crisis

Governor John Baldacci is reactivating an energy task force to develop recommendations to address the growing energy crisis.

The Pre-emergency Energy Assistance Task Force has until July 15 to come up with actions to help the state and its residents save money on fuel, according to the Bangor Daily News. The governor told the paper he will consider everything from executive orders to legislation that may need to be addressed in a special legislative session this summer. Improved public transportation; expanding the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP; and promoting telecommuting may be among the ideas examined.

The governor's staff and Cabinet are also simultaneously examining more long-term ways to reduce energy costs.
