Whistleblower wins court case

A jury on Monday awarded $84,000 to a New Gloucester man who claims he was fired after blowing the whistle on unlicensed work being done at Saddleback Ski Area.

Robert Duggan Jr. was working for Farmington-based Integrity Electrical Instillation and Service Inc. as a foreman on the $20 million renovation project at the Rangeley ski resort when he claims he was fired after calling attention to work that violated state electrical codes being done by unlicensed individuals, according to the Sun Journal in Lewiston. Duggan claims Saddleback's manager and Sargent & Sons Builders, the general contractor, pressured his immediate boss to fire him. After he was fired, Duggan contacted the Maine Human Rights Commission and filed suit.

An Androscoggin County Superior Court jury has ruled that both Saddleback and Sargent & Sons must each pay Duggan $2,000 in back pay and $40,000 in damages, the paper said. A judge is expected to rule on other charges being brought by Duggan and the MHRC, including whether Integrity Electrical Instillation and Service discriminated against the electrician in violation of the Maine Human Rights Act and the Whistleblowers Protection Act.
