Tax reform, casino efforts move forward

State election officials have confirmed that an effort to repeal a recent tax reform law will appear on the June 2010 ballot.

The Secretary of State's office has certified that there are enough valid signatures to put the people's veto of the tax reform bill on the June 8 ballot, according to a press release. Out of the 71,035 signatures submitted by Still Fed Up With Taxes, the group that led the petition effort, 56,107 were determined to be valid, surpassing the minimum of 55,087 signatures needed to put a veto effort on the ballot. The certification comes one week after Still Fed Up With Taxes said it was filing a petition to force Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap to certify the signatures, after missing the Oct. 13 deadline.

In related news, the group pushing for a casino in Oxford County announced it has collected 99,000 signatures to put the proposal on the November 2010 ballot, according to a press release from Black Bear Entertainment LLC, the company proposing the casino and resort complex. The signatures must be verified on the municipal level before being submitted to the Secretary of State's office to be validated. Voters last November said no to a casino in Oxford County.
