About 100 laid-off textile workers in Maine will receive training and job search assistance, thanks to a nearly $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor's National Emergency Grants.
The U.S. DOL is awarding the state's Department of Labor a $462,096 grant for workers laid off from True Textiles Inc. in Guilford and Newport, according to a press release from the U.S. DOL. The grant will be administered by the Eastern Maine Development Corp. and will help workers eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance. The grant will cover services not available through the TAA program, such as job search skills and skills training in the health care, business services and trade industries. Regional adult education programs and the Maine Community College System will provide the job skills training.
True Textiles, an interior fabrics manufacturer, cut its staff from September 2008 to March 2009, according to the release. Funding for the National Emergency Grants comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
