The Center to become Waterville arts hub

The nonprofit Waterville Creates! plans to transform The Center at 93 Main St. in downtown Waterville into an arts hub that will include artist, clay and recording studios, in addition to an art gallery.

A centerpiece of the transformation will be Common Street Arts, which will move from 16 Common St. to The Center by July 1, according to the Kennebec Journal.

Common Street Arts’ entrance to The Center will be off Castonguay Square.

“That will hopefully create some opportunities for animating the park,” Nate Rudy, Waterville Creates! executive director, told the newspaper.

The Center is a landmark connected to Waterville’s City Hall and the Waterville Opera House. The transformation comes amid downtown revitalization efforts spearheaded by Colby College and the city.

Waterville Creates! owns The Center, and has its office there. To accommodate changes, some existing users, including Waterville Creates! and the community Group REM, will shift spaces.
