Thornton Academy partners with UNE to make college more affordable

Thornton Academy and the University of New England announced on Wednesday a new partnership that will allow qualified graduates of the Saco boarding school to enter UNE's College of Arts & Sciences with sophomore standing.

Thornton signed a similar agreement with the University of Maine’s College of Engineering last year.

In a statement about the new partnership, U.S. Sen. Angus King also announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce was awarding an “Export Achievement Certificate” to Thornton Academy in recognition of the school’s continued work to attract international students and the subsequent economic development that those efforts have contributed to the state.

Thornton Academy is the first school in Maine and only the third school in New England to receive the award.

UNE President Danielle Ripich said she hoped to expand UNE's partnership to other high schools in the future so that more incoming students will have the accelerated, three-year degree option.
