$4M grant to fund new MDI Bio Lab facility

The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory has won nearly $4 million through the stimulus act to build a new lab building on its Salisbury Cove campus.

The biolab will demolish a 1970s-era building to make way for a 10,000-square-foot facility that's expected to be occupied by late fall 2011, according to a press release from the organization. The new building, funded with a $3.86 million grant from the National Center for Research Resources at the National Institutes of Health, will be registered for LEED certification, much like another lab building completed on the campus in 2008.

As the biolab has grown from nine to more than 45 employees over the last decade, its need for a new, state-of-the-art facility for biomedical research and research training programs has grown, the release states. The biolab leads a statewide research consortium that in May received $18 million in federal funds to boost biomedical training for students and scientists.
