Topsham biz park plans scrapped

A potential location for a regional business park in Topsham has been scrapped because the site was found to contain too many wetlands.

An informal environmental analysis of the 130-acre site, located northeast of the Interstate 295-Route 196 interchange, revealed the property has a high amount of wetland area and a number of vernal pools, according to Mathew Eddy, director of economic and community development for the town of Brunswick. Eddy told Mainebiz that the Army Corps of Engineers "made it clear that they would never likely approve this kind of project."

The site was one of two locations being considered by the towns of Topsham and Brunswick for a regional business park to help create jobs following the closure of the Brunswick Naval Air Station. The other site, a 130-acre location on Old Portland Road in Brunswick, underwent a similar assessment and was deemed buildable. The towns are developing a detailed proposal for that site and will present it at a public information meeting sometime in July, Eddy said.
