Town gives nod to nudity

Selectmen in Vassalboro have opted against banning full or partial nudity at local businesses, allowing a topless coffee shop to move forward with its expansion plans.

The Board of Selectmen on Wednesday made substantial revisions to a proposed ordinance that would have banned nudity, voting instead to give the town the ability to "regulate their location and manner of operation," according to the Kennebec Journal. The ordinance was proposed after residents complained about the Grand View Topless Coffee Shop, which opened in February and features topless waiters and waitresses. Its owner, Donald Crabtree, last month said he planned to expand the business and add a strip club, but so far has not filed an application with the town.

A public hearing and a final vote on the ordinance are scheduled for May 14 and June 8, respectively. If passed, it would allow Vassalboro officials to issue annual licenses for sexually oriented businesses and prevent them from opening near residences, schools, places of worship and other public areas, according to the paper. Crabtree's existing coffee shop would be grandfathered and not affected by the ordinance.
