Verso report notes progress

Citing dynamic changes in the paper industry, Verso Paper Corp. released its internal report card on sustainability objectives, affirming its commitment to balance economic, social and environmental needs.

The report, "A Climate of Change - Sustainability Report 2008"  details the Memphis-based company's progress on numerous sustainability goals at its paper mills in Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Tennessee and Jay and Bucksport, Maine. "Certainly, we factor issues like the strained U.S. economy, increased input costs and an ever-evolving coated paper marketplace into how we operate our business. But external forces have not deterred us from fully integrating our sustainability principles into our business decisions, and doing so remains a key strategy at Verso," said CEO Mike Jackson in the report's introduction.

Among other measures, the report details the company's progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions (28% since 1998), its increasing the use of certified fibers (now 65%), achieving enhanced ISO standards and enhancing its corporate transparency since converting to a publically held company last May.
