A Washington, D.C.-based transportation group has identified 50 road and bridge repairs it says represent the state’s most pressing needs.
The Portland Press Herald reported that 12 of the top projects are major roads or highways that need significant rebuilding, 19 are major bridges with deficiencies and 18 are sections of road that need safety or access improvements. The report also says the state should increase capacity at Portland’s International Marine Terminal, where the Icelandic shipping company Eimskip moved its North American headquarters earlier this year.
The top three projects were ranked by volume of travel, the degree of deficiency, the regional importance of the route, cost of repair and importance to the regional economy. On that scale, the report identified the state’s top three infrastructure needs as repairing a portion of Route 3 in Bar Harbor, the gateway to Acadia National Park; replacement of the Union Street Bridge in Bangor; and reconstruction of a portion of Route 302 in Portland.
