Documents obtained by a Connecticut newspaper have confirmed Google’s involvement in a mysterious structure docked in Portland Harbor.
The New London-based paper The Day reported that Coast Guard officials met in May with project managers from Google, Cianbro Corp. and New York-based Turner Construction to discuss plans for the structure that has been shrouded in secrecy.
The paper reported the documents it obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request also revealed Coast Guard officials participated in a conference call in July with a naval architect, a marine transportation company and Michael Tierney, of Google Glass, to review plans for the project.
The documents do not provide insights into the nature of the project, but detail plans to operate the vessel in various ports, starting with New York Harbor.
Google has not responded to requests for comment on the matter.
The Portland Press Herald reported that Coast Guard officials in San Francisco on Wednesday confirmed, but later recanted, their statement that search engine giant Google is involved with a nearly identical four-story structure in San Francisco Harbor.
