Truck weight exemption now law

Congress has given final approval to a bill that includes a provision to allow heavier trucks on Maine's interstates.

The U.S. Senate and House of Representatives earlier this month gave initial support to the measure to allow trucks weighing up to 100,000 pounds to travel on Maine's federal interstates, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, who authored the provision. The provision, which will be in place for 20 years, increases the truck weight limit from 80,000 pounds from Augusta north on I-95. The measure is part of a 2012 spending bill that President Obama signed this morning.
