Tug builder lays off 65, plans to rebuild

Washburn & Doughty Associates was forced yesterday to temporarily lay off 65 employees as the company rebuilds after a fire last week destroyed its boatyard in East Boothbay.

Friday's fire, caused by sparks from a cutting torch, destroyed the 50,000-square-foot boat-building facility and the two tugboats under construction inside. The damage has been estimated at $30 million.

The company has retained 35 employees to finish one tugboat that survived the fire, according to the Portland Press Herald. Operations Manager Lee Smith told the paper the company expects to be back to building boats within three months.
