Two midcoast nursing homes to close

Two midcoast nursing homes are closing their doors in a month, leaving their 77 residents to find new care facilities and at least 44 employees looking for new jobs.

Kindred Healthcare, based in Kentucky, is planning to shut down Shore Village Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Rockland and Fieldcrest Manor in Waldoboro on June 1, according to The Courier-Gazette in Rockland. Fieldcrest manor has 44 regular employees, but Shore Village declined to tell the paper how many employees it had. Kindred Healthcare has been trying to sell the facilities since last year, but has not been able to find a buyer and said it is no longer feasible to continue operating those facilities, according to the paper.

A Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson told The Courier-Gazette that the homes cannot legally close until every resident has been placed in another facility.
