The Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems, which serves Maine and the other four coastal New England states, is receiving $1.77 million in federal funding to enhance its ocean observing work.
NERACOOS, a component of the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System, services coastal waters from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick to Long Island Sound, providing fishermen and commercial shippers with information, including weather and ocean data, according to a press release. The majority of the funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will be distributed among its research partners. The University of Maine Physical Oceanography Group will receive money to support operations and maintenance of the Gulf of Maine buoy array and a coastal radar system that measures currents and supports search and rescue. The Gulf of Maine Research Institute will receive money to support NERACOOS data management, website and data product development.
Other organizations in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Nova Scotia are also receiving funding.
