UMaine picks new president

Paul Ferguson, the former vice chancellor of academic affairs at Southern Illinois University, is the new president of the University of Maine.

The University of Maine System Board of Trustees yesterday unanimously voted in support of Ferguson following a recommendation by Chancellor Richard Pattenaude, according to the Bangor Daily News. Ferguson was one of four finalists vetted by university officials and was chosen in part for his success in launching new academic programs, recruiting students and fundraising. Ferguson has no connections to Maine, but was drawn to the university because of its reputation, he told the paper. Ferguson will begin his new job July 1 and will receive an annual salary of $250,000, plus potential bonuses of $20,000 a year.

Ferguson succeeds Robert Kennedy, who announced last March he would step down at the end of this academic year after running the Orono school for seven years.
