Good Will-Hinckley pitches magnet school

Officials at Good Will-Hinckley are proposing an agricultural and environmental-themed magnet school and are seeking state funds to launch it.

Lawmakers yesterday who met to discuss the state budget proposal heard testimony from Good Will-Hinckley President Glenn Cummings on the Averill School day program, which the nonprofit hopes to open this fall, according to a press release from the Fairfield-based organization. Should the state approve $730,000 a year, the organization would provide a boarding option for children as early as January 2012. Cummings said the school would use a "hands-on approach to learning and [teach] independent living and job skills to Maine's future work force," according to the release. If the state approves the funding, it would be the state's second magnet school.

Good Will-Hinckley Home for Boys and Girls laid off more than 100 people in 2009 and scrapped most of its residential and educational programs in the face of budget problems. Last year, the organization released a strategic plan to continue operations that included a long-term public-private partnership with other organizations or businesses, as well as selling or leasing land or buildings on its 2,450-acre campus.

The state will hold a work session in about a month to continue discussing the proposal, according to the release.
