UMaine System may raise tuition 10%

The University of Maine System may raise tuition by 10% for the coming school year to cope with rising utility costs and flat state funding.

The UMS board's facilities and finance committee yesterday approved the tuition increase, and the full board is expected to vote on the measure today, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Under the plan, tuition at UMS campuses would rise 10.1% on average, to $7,822 for a full-time student; financial aid would increase by 11.4%; and $15.7 million in operating costs would be cut from the system's total budget, the paper reported.
