The University of Maine at Presque Isle this fall will introduce a bachelor of science degree in cybersecurity — one of only five degree programs in New England dedicated to the field.
In partnership with other UMaine campuses, UMPI will offer coursework focusing on the global protection of information systems from digital attacks. In addition to the bachelor’s degree concentration, students can study cybersecurity as a minor to supplement other majors.
The new program is intended to prepare students for jobs ranging from forensic computer analyst and IT security engineer to security systems administrator and vulnerability assessor.
“Cybersecurity is a rapidly growing field and one of the fastest-growing professions in demand around the country and in the Northeast region,” UMPI President Ray Rice said in a news release. “UMPI is well positioned to assist in meeting that need.”
In creating the degree program, the school joins the University of Maine System’s Maine Cybersecurity Center, launched last year. The center provides UMS campuses with academic support and tools, including a platform for cyber warfare-simulation.
To help launch the program, UMPI hired Fred Strickland as assistant professor of cybersecurity, starting in August. He has a doctorate in computer science from Auburn University.
