UMS asks for more funding

Trustees for the University of Maine System voted yesterday to ask for $8 million in additional state funding for the fiscal year.

The Legislature has already approved a $3.4 million increase to the system's $186 million appropriation for fiscal year 2009, which begins July 8, 2008. But UMS Chancellor Richard Pattenaude says that's not enough, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The extra funds would be used to reduce a pending 12.6% tuition increase to around six percent. UMS spokesman John Diamond told the paper the request is unrelated to the UMS bond question on today's ballot, which Diamond says will be used for infrastructure development.
