United Airlines plans to suspend daily flights between Washington Dulles and Bangor International airports starting in early March as part of a wider route readjustment, the carrier has said.

"As we continue to evaluate our network and closely match supply with demand, United is making adjustments to our East Coast operations, including suspending service between Washington Dulles/D.C. and several regional markets, and shifting some service from Washington D.C. to New York/Newark," United said in a statement emailed to Mainebiz over the weekend, confirming reports in various media outlets.

"After these adjustments, United will still serve nearly the same number of destinations from Dulles that it did in 2019," the statement added.

A spokeswoman for United confirmed that the routes being suspended include Washington Dulles to Bangor International, a joint civil-military public airport owned and operated by the city of Bangor.

Aimee Thibodeau, marketing and business development manager for Bangor International Airport, told Mainebiz that the airport had been notified by United about suspending service between Dulles and Bangor as of March 4 due to extensive pilot shortages at the carrier.

However, she noted that United plans to start flights to Newark Liberty International Airport earlier in the season to ensure there is no gap in the airline's service to and from Bangor.

"While we hate to lose any service, we realize that current strains on the industry and are hopeful that United is able to bring back the Dulles flight in 2023 as they told us they hope to," she said via email.

Thibodeau added that the Dulles service is the only fight United currently offers out of Bangor International Airport.
