United Way of Greater Portland on Thursday unveiled $6.8 million worth of community investments planned for its fiscal year 2020. The list of recipients includes Avesta Housing, the LearningWorks after-school program and the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project.
Investments in community partners are made based on expert advice and under the direction of local volunteers.
More than 45 volunteers, using rigorous criteria, spent more than 600 combined hours evaluating requests and ensuring grants were distributed objectively and aligned to make the greatest impact on long-term goals laid out in a plan known as Thrive2027.
Developed by leaders of businesses, nonprofits, government and schools, Thrive2027 is a shared vision for a stronger Cumberland County that aims to give more children a better start in school, improve education and employment opportunities for adults, and ensure more people live longer, healthier lives.
"United Way's approach to building a thriving community includes a focused, intentional effort to move our region beyond what we've always done," said Liz Cotter Schlax, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Portland, in a news release.
She added: "We're looking forward to expanding on what we've learned through our 90-year history of service and expertise in working with leaders to foster innovative collaborative partnerships across the region and sectors."
