New unemployment figures for Maine are out today, and they portray a June job market that was even slightly tighter than the hiring environment in May.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in June was 3.2%, according to data released Friday by the Maine Department of Labor. The May rate was 3.3%.
Maine's unemployment rate has changed little over the past two years, varying between 3.2% and 3.5%, state economist Glenn Mills said in a news release. Maine’s unemployment rate has been below 4% for 42 consecutive months, the longest period on record.
The previous streak was 22 months, ending in June 2001.
Maine's private sector had 533,300 jobs in June, an increase of 4,000 from a year ago, with gains primarily in the manufacturing, finance and insurance, and hospitality sectors, according to Mills.
The U.S. unemployment rate for June was estimated at 3.7%, up slightly from 3.6% in May and down from 4% one year ago.
The June 2019 rates elsewhere in New England were: Connecticut, 3.7%; Massachusetts, 3%; New Hampshire, 2.5%; Rhode Island, 3.6%; and Vermont, 2.1%.
