USDA invests $1.4 million in rural development
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development program announced a number of Maine projects will receive a total of $1.4 million in investments, according to a release from U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud.
• Dexter Utility District will receive a $600,000 loan and $420,000 grant to make critical upgrades at its 25-year-old wastewater treatment facility;
• Fish River Rural Health will receive $150,000 in direct loan funding to purchase a medical office building in Fort Kent that will allow Fish River Rural Health to continue to provide health care services at lower costs;
• Indian Township Health Clinic will receive $34,100 in grant funding to obtain a new electronic medical health records system for the Passamaquoddy Indian Township Health Clinic;
• Pleasant Point Passamaquoddy Reservation will receive $33,750 in grant funding to repair the roof of an administrative building;
• Penobscot Indian Nation will receive $80,000 in loans to replace sewer mains on Indian Island, eliminating a health hazard and threat to the Penobscot River watershed;
• The New Vineyard Public Library ($9,850) and the New Vineyard Public Library Association ($17,750) will receive grants to address building accessibility issues, install a new septic system and well, and build an addition;
• The Greater Eastport Ecumenical Churches Association will receive $30,000 in grants to help purchase necessary equipment for the Labor of Love Food Pantry and improve parking;
• The Patriarch's Club will receive $30,250 in the form of an Economic Impact Initiative Grant to be used toward an exhibition building to showcase educational and cultural displays on natural agriculture based fibers like alpaca and sheep at the Harmony Free Fair.
