USDA to dole out rural energy project funds

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development program is extending loans and grants to rural Maine businesses looking to become more energy efficient.

Rural Development is now accepting applications for its Rural Energy for America program to help agricultural producers and rural small businesses buy and install renewable energy systems or make energy-efficiency upgrades, according to the Sun Journal. Participants can receive grants of up to 25% of the cost of eligible projects, or combine grants and guaranteed loans to cover up to 75% of the total cost. The USDA has allocated $177,000 for grants of $20,000 or less, $306,000 for grants of more than $20,000, and $599,000 for guaranteed loans, according to the paper.

Applications are due by May 1.
