University of Southern Maine will begin offering a curriculum in renewable energy, thanks to a $175,000 National Science Foundation grant.
USM officials announced that its Department of Environmental Science will use the three-year grant to develop a renewable-energy curriculum that integrates hands-on experience. The certificate program is expected to help students learn to map wind and solar resources in southern Maine, test energy efficiency and study the production and testing of more sustainable biofuels, according to a release from the university. It will also help expand USM's energy research and testing capabilities and provide students with international internship opportunities in energy planning and implementation.
Daniel Martínez, an environmental science professor, will head up the program, according to the release. He came to USM in 2008 to establish an energy teaching and research program after completing a postdoctoral fellowship through the University of Rochester and the AHEAD Energy Corp., a charitable organization attempting to increase energy access across Africa.
