The University of Southern Maine has named Britney Mitchell as the next director of admissions.
Mitchell will succeed Rachel Morales, who is preparing to retire from USM after working in admissions for two decades.
“Britney will build upon the amazing work Rachel has done as the university thrived, welcoming more out-of-state students year after year with continually diversifying classes,” said Meaghan Arena, vice president for enrollment management, marketing and student retention.
Mitchell, a native of Massachusetts, started at USM as an admissions counselor in 2015. During her time at the university, she has held many roles, including her most recent role as director of transfer affairs. In that position, she built relationships with faculty and administrators to better prepare the university for an influx of transfer students from Maine’s community colleges.
“I have seen the University of Southern Maine change, adapt and meet the needs of its students in the best ways possible and am excited to be stepping into a role that can have such a transformative impact in a student’s life,” said Mitchell.
Mitchell received her bachelor's degree in geography and justice studies from the University of New Hampshire and her master’s degree in higher education administration from Bay Path University.
The University of Southern Maine, part of the University of Maine System, is a public university with over 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students taking courses online and at campuses in Portland, Gorham and Lewiston-Auburn.
USM was ranked No. 3 among Maine's largest colleges and universities in the 2024 Mainebiz Book of Lists, based on full-time undergraduate enrollment in fall 2023.
